Getting Started and Downloading Software

Learning the basics of Citrix XenApp 5 is a fairly easy process. However, understanding all the installation options, configuration settings, management consoles and administrative processes for all the various Citrix software and hardware components that can go into a Citrix farm can be a daunting task. This book will lead you from the very first step to the very last step of installing, configuring and testing XenApp 5 on a single server running Windows Server 2003. The goal – to get you installing and running a published application in the shortest amount of time.

In Part 1, I will show you how to create a MyCitrix.com account, download a copy of XenServer 5.6, download an evaluation copy of XenApp 5 Feature Pack 3 and download a new license file for XenApp 5. MyCitrix.com is your primary mechanism for interacting with Citrix and managing your company’s use of their software. You must have a MyCitrix.com account to:

register your products
manage your licenses
download software
update your profile
and more

For this book, Citrix XenServer 5.6 will be used with Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard (x86) and Citrix XenApp 5 Feature Pack 3 for Server 2003 Platinum (x86). The server’s name will be citrixone. The Virtual Machine (VM) will be assigned two processors, 4GB of RAM and 16GB of Hard Drive space. If you already have a MyCitrix.com account, the XenApp 5 for Server 2003 software and the XenServer 5.6 software then you may proceed to Part 2.

Creating a MyCitrix Account

To create your MyCitrix.com account, go to http://www.mycitrix.com. You will see this screen (Figure 1-1):

Click on New Users (Figure 1-2).

Fill in the required information and click Continue (Figure 1-3).

On this screen you will select your MyCitrix.com Login ID and Password (Figure 1-4).

Once you have entered a Login ID and Password and successfully completed the validation process you will be taken to your personalized MyCitrix.com site (Figure 1-5).

You will also receive an e-mail from Citrix Customer Care with your Citrix login information.

Download XenApp

You are ready to start the process of downloading your evaluation license and software. Click on Downloads (Figure 1-6):

Click the dropdown box under Search Downloads by Product (Figure 1-7):

Select Citrix XenApp (Figure 1-8).

Under the Evaluation / Trial Software section, click on XenApp — Platinum Edition Evaluation — English (Figure 1-9).

Click Get License (Figure 1-10).

A new Windows opens up for License Retrieval. Click Retrieve License (Figure 1-11).

Click on one of the Serial Number selections (Figure 1-12).

The license activation process begins with your selected Serial Number automatically entered. Click Continue (Figure 1-13).

You are taken to a screen to search for a Solution Advisor. If you do not have a Solution Advisor, feel free to search for my employer, LPS Integration in Nashville, TN. Enter your search criteria and click Search (Figure 1-14).

Select your Solution Advisor and click Continue (Figure 1-15).

You now select the contact to assign to your MyCitrix.com account. You will probably have only one entry here. Click Submit (Figure 1-16).

Enter your physical address information and click Submit (Figure 1-17).

You are taken to the screen to start the License Server name process (Figure 1-18). Click Continue.

You are taken to the Allocate Licenses screen. Our License Server name is citrixone. Enter citrixone and click Allocate (Figure 1-19).

Next, verify the server’s hostname is correct (Figure 1-20). If it is, then click Confirm. If it is not correct, click the back arrow and enter the correct name.

You are now ready to download your Citrix license file. Click the Download License File button (Figure 1-21).

Click Save (Figure 1-22) and save the license file to a location accessible when installing XenApp 5 in Part 5.

The license file may be renamed as long as the .lic file extension is kept. This is helpful when you have several license files to maintain. Click Save (Figure 1-23).

Close the additional Window that was opened for the license process. You should still be on the screen to download XenApp 5 Evaluation software. We are now ready to download the XenApp 5 product files. Click on Download to the right of XenApp 5 for Windows Server 2003 (Figure 1-24).

After clicking Download you should be presented with the Download Agreement dialog box. There are times where it may take multiple tries to get to this screen. The first time, you may see a “requested file does not exist” popup. Exit out of that popup and click Download again. The second time, you may see a “Your account does not allow you to access the requested resource”. Exit out of that popup and click Download again. The third time is usually the charm and you should see the Download Agreement dialog. Click the box next to “I have read and certify…” and click Accept (Figure 1-25).

You now receive a Popup Window for the Download Manager. You can either use the Download Manager or not. Since this file is so large go ahead and install the Download Manager add-on.

Click the link Click to download your file now (Figure 1-26).

Click the Yellow banner to install Download Manager (Figures 1-27, 1-28 and 1-29).

Save the XA50_FP2_WS03_EN.iso file, (Figure 1-30), to a location accessible when installing XenApp 5 in Part 5.

While the Download Manager downloads the XenApp 5 product image, we can download Feature Pack 3. Click on Download to the right of XenApp 5 Feature Pack 3 for Windows Server 2003 & 2008 (Figure 1-31).

After clicking Download you should be presented with the Download Agreement dialog box. Click the box next to “I have read and certify…” and click Accept (Figure 1-32).
